Hissing Groom

The worlds an assortment of strange events, some funny some horrendous, others tragic and some weird. Yet others which defy description..at least to me. I am flummoxed. Maybe one of you can provide us with a clue .

It was recently reported that a woman got married to a snake. A story I read on Indianpad.

What could have been her motivation? Was it truly a choice? Honestly I cannot decide whether amusement is the reaction I feel or despair at this example of Indian tradition (it is not the first) so rooted in beliefs which trigger queries whether progress in India is ever going to arrive at the doorsteps of our villagers, or will there always be a disparity of such giant proportions between metro life and rural life?

Oh well.. atleast it will keep her safe from in-laws..No dowry death for this maiden!

Welll... lets look at it this way... instead of marrying a snake in a man's clothing, she thought it was probably better to marry a true, blue snake!!

And the snake is a phallic symbol..she got something right:)

the motivation is there...
she did (and surely not of free will...when do women in india and that too in a village have that anyway?) that to bring good fortune in the village...
i have read stories in papers and magazines of little and big girls being married off to dogs to bring good fortune or rain or whatever...
that she claims that she is in love with a snake is a new thing perhaps...
and its like being married to a god like devdasis...

Neha,

honey moon.. that certainly was the farthest thought from my mind..somehow.. maybe coz the improbabiliy and ridiculousness of the event did not demand logistics. But come to think of it..what can one think???

Ck,

Now thats one true blue blooded man..taking on the wrath of his fellowmen? Are you saying this since it is politically correct, or dya mean it?

dim poetry,

can alsmost sense the romanticism that had taken hold of you while envisioning the first meeting of our maiden n the snake on a cool moonlit night, with silence all around except for the occasional hiss or two when the snake slithered up to his love and feeling the touch of her smooth skin on his scaly..eeewwwwww.

Its best I stop there.. giving me the creeps.

Sanjay,

Nehas first thought was the honeymoon .Yours the phallic symbol. If I was a psychiatrist, i might have deduced a thing or two..You know the rapid fire variety which reveal deep dark secrets:)

Silbil,
Yes I have read abouth the doggy wedding to...also for the good of the village n some such crap. This is waht i mean. It is scary. Children are brutally murdered coz some 'devi' needs the blood of the virgin.. and now this. Anything to get on the right side of the gods..Ofcourse without having to do RIGHT.

Really dream of an awakened and literate India.

If I beleived in political correct-ness, then my foot wouldn't be in my mouth as often as it is!!
Of course, at times, the tongue-in-the-cheek also appears to be a foot-in-the-mouth!!
