Wardrobe Male-Function

The media and its activism in highlighting stories such as Jessica's or Meher's had almost made me want to send them a note of thankfulness.

However,as before, the media has revealed itself as a double edged sword. It has angered, disgusted and irked me enough to write this piece. The issue in question is the undignified, uncalled for and blowing up beyond all proportions of accepted decency, the 'wardrobe malfunction'scam.

For Petes sake, it was an accident..it could happen anywhere, to anyone on any day. Becoz it involves the dis-robing of a popular model and therefore titillates the average male and his perverse sense of voyeurism, it has received the kind of attention from not only the press and t.v. but also the internet. It is the 'hot' topic of the week !!

Appears as if the public is so starved of excitement simultaneously so hungering for it, that about 'anything', even if it is a split second slump of a gown, sends them into a 'viagric' tizzy.

Despite the strides we seem to be making in all areas of life as an 'evolved' race, or so we'd like to believe, the manner in which the public and the gazers across the board have lapped up this story with their tongues hanging out, clamouring for more, is appalling and highly deplorable.

Grow Up Guys!! Latch on to more than the story of an unclasped hook!!

To be honest, curiosity is there. What is wrong is the way it has been exploited by the media and for the number of days it is making news.

i don't know about only it only being a male function
because the whole big deal about fashion whether it is the straved looking models with bones sticking out and unpleasent expression on their faces is all about this much to show and this much to cover up...
men seem to be consuming all at a very insane speed as far as this is conecerned and i am sorry but the women seem to be catering to it equally insanely and at the same speed...so a lot of women (not only models) but normal women around us are very happy being objectified...any thing for 5 mins of ego massage!!!
so why blame it only on the men
and if you ask me even the women are equally titiliated by the whole thing...
and i think its quite intersting that the fact that 'realistic porn' with real sounds and visuals sells more than imaginatively shot kinky kind of porn
it's really funny and strange that all those who have been gettinge nough share of bare bodies for years...
pamela anderson is kind of fading in our meomories...get themsleves in a tizzy when rima sen's mms travels from one phone to other
i mean for sure teh porn stars have better bodies than rima ...it's just the exitement of seeing a normal girl in a normal circumstance baring herself which seems to ahev happened in the malefunction issue here...it just seems a little less contrived so oh
so exciting

Silbil,

I disagree with you.

Firstly this is not just about titillation on a personal level as a derivative of consensual choice. This is an accident which has been sensationalised.

Secondly, for media to have taken on the garb of national entertainment vehicle, is news to me and depressingly so. Social responsibility that is an unwritten law as far as media goes, has to be the sole determining factor as to the frequency of the news item and its mileage. What is happening here is a gross disproportionof the said occurrence not only in its relevance but also in comparison to the update on say Meher's case.

Thirdly, has anybody bothered to envisage what the model has been put through, for no fault of hers and without her consent.!! She has definitely not assented to the clips of her bare bosom to be circulated by all n sundry, all over the world.

How does this not seem exploitation of an individual for mere titillation of the world in general?

This is not a film made with the intention of public viewing.Neither is it an ad where the model has been signed on for the specific purpose.

I cannot fathom as to why has she not taken legal action against those who have initiated distribution of the snaps.

Surely there are other avenues to satisfy your need for excitement..not at the expense of another human being.

perhaps you are right kaveeta...i just reacted to the post as it kind of sounded like all men are bastards kind of statement and for sure we don't believe in that right...
about the role of media a friend of mine had commented on a psot of mine where i was enraged by the Mid Day reporting of Kuljeet's randhawa's suicide and she had remarked very aptly that some of our friends (Mumbai Delhi girls , post graduates....not seemingly flaky girls ) seemed to know everything that kuljeet wrote in her suicide note(for gossip not empathy) and wouldn't know who meher is or where abu gharib is ...
so media is giving us what we are asking...
also check this ...you might find it intersting

When media gets mortgaged to the the trp game, where gaining of 'eyeballs'is the criteria for time slot then we are in for trouble. In the war of the channels, where news has a very wide spectrum as an interpretation, then 'Doosri radha' which should have been relegated to the bin has been given top slot..Is this what we want or a lack of choice in the matter. One channel subscribes to it and all the others follow suit.

And male bashing is DEFINITELY NOT a slant of this blog at least. Generalisations are dangerous and have been avoided in spirit. My experience with the men in my life, father, brother, husband, son has been uplifting, to say the least. Men cannot be hated, just as women should not. It is the adoption of traits which one was referring to and at certain junctures, things have to be classified and slotted

Good voice, Kaveetaa!!

I remember the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction too; and I couldn't believe the hype over it!! O dear, people saw a "breast." big deal!!

More important issues in the world to talk about, like equality for women' the abolishment of dowries!!

I reckon the issue should've been the quality of workmanship that the Indian designers deliver at those astronomical prices that they charge. I have worked with big ticket European names like Armani, Versace and Donna Karan and know for a fact the amount of research that goes into making of a garment, the tests that various accesories like zips and buttons need to be put through before a garment is presented to the public. This was a ramp show and the media went into a tizzy over a titty. Imagine the situation had this happened to you at a party or a similar social occasion... and you would've paid through your nose for a garment that you'd probably wear once in a life time!!

This boob issue has been so hyped up,it is deplorable. The press is always looking for titillation, because'tit'illation sells!!!!.Just a boob on the ramp excites so much?well what happens when a wife feeds a man's child?is there a titillation?after all a woman is a woman,be it a mother or a model. The designer should have said sorry to the model in full public,at least the 'sorry' in public would have sent the msg about the respect of a woman's dignity. And as for the media, due u need nude to sell news?News is to be informed not sold!

Hi North,

Yes I recall reading about the incident you have quoted.. you know one can understand a mention or two but not this whole business of going ga-ga over it. Its unfair primarily to the model.

Chameleons karma,
By virtue of you being in a related field, you have given a valid and pertinent perspective..come to think of it, sure, in all propriety, the designer in question has to be made answerable and I daresay , in the circumstances, credibility of the designer is at stake here.Your take on it is thought provoking..if only those who matter could have seen it this way!

Anonymous,
I guess the designer should have apologised to the model.. how true. Also, perhaps requested the photographers to refrain from using the footage. This would amount to a dignified gesture and a sense of modesty restored for the model. As far as the media goes, the crux of the matter therefore is 'news' being sold, and the commercialisation of news has expectedly translated into abuse of the power of the media as well.

I agree Kaveetaa; the media, in these more modern times; have stepped slightly over the line of scruples in some stories.

North,

Not just the media..Have a look at the link which silbil has pasted..the politicos are in a frenzy as well. Apparently India has solved all her major existential problems..

Silbil.. I would not be surprised if they have asked for an action re-play as well to confirm their investigations.

though it's written in a lighter vain (almost) though has pertinent points to make as well...
please check this blog post http://greatbong.net/2006/04/04/skeleton-in-the-wardrobe/#more-215

what is wrong with us...
is this what we are going to leave a legacy for the future generations...
somehow i believe that Osho was right when he said that more we supress it more it comes out in twisted ways w.r.t sex and isn't this what is happening...
we are so demented about sex it's not funny and dementia also becomes insensitivity and irresposnble...

Kaveetaa Kaul said...

Silbil,

I read the link.

Somehow i cannot come to terms with the fact that this was a pre-meditated act.

for reasons put forth also by chamelon here.

This is totally different from the scenario of janet jackson where it may /may not have been intentional. But the designers stand the risk of losing their credibility as well, in this case. Unless insanity has struck to an insane proportion, I cannot digest the theory of intentional show of 'malfunction' as put forth by greatbong.

North said...

Wow! I'm surprised it went so far, as to a complete investigative, "tax-paying" court-appointed avenue, for a wardrobe malfunction!

Well, that's men for ya!!(oops, did I giggle that, out loud)?

North said...

To further add; again, I see the media hype of repetitive replay, feed a frenzy of generational gapping and possibly so far as religious chastising?

I would love to see these models, in live/interview..to explain how easy it is for some gowns/clothes to malfunction

What might help support their campaign, to right, the wrongs; is to have other female and/or even male models if applicable; write IN< to IndiaTimes, with thier "most embarassing" moments, too?

this would heighten the plight to minor and rare, wardrobe malfunctions, without purpose of instant fame; being a prime suspect?

North,

designers have been crying themselves hoarse over the fact that as close to 80 changes are made in a matter of 30 minutes for each designer..hence these and other such are bound to occur if the designers have not done a 'fool proof' job.

But as in most instances, what gets highlighted is only what suits the media. Who wants to know the boring truth!

North said...

Indeed, Kaveetaa; why is the truth, so boring? Makes one ponder the reasoning, in such reasoning? lol

Kaveetaa Kaul said...

North, our penchant for all things sensational is the cause of major ills in our society which media banks on.If we decide to reject that which is devoid of the kernel of truth, as a world we will be a place which will transform into a fear free zone.
